Which eggs should i buy-2

Easter and Passover are around the corner. My family celebrates Passover and traditionally, I make a lot of dishes with eggs during Passover. Passover and Easter both use eggs as a symbol of renewal and spring.

I feel very strongly about what kind of eggs we eat, because chickens are so commonly factory farmed in the US.

Chickens raised in factory farms are raised in conditions that are inhumane and unsanitary, which leaves them more susceptible to disease. This requires them to be given antibiotics.

That means that when we eat eggs that are factory farmed, we are eating eggs enriched with antibiotics – UGH!

Antibiotics kill the good gut flora that we need for healthy digestion. They also weaken our own immune system.

Now to complicate matters, the egg industry – in response to consumer concern – has given us a lot of different options.

There’s…

  • Pasture Fed
  • Free Range
  • Cage Free
  • Organic
  • Vegetarian Fed
  • Omega rich
  • and regular old no-name eggs

So, what kind of eggs should we buy?

Here’s the short and sweet answer –

Go for the pasture fed eggs.

Pasture fed means that the chickens that lay your eggs get to wander around outside and are not raised in an industrial factory farm. This makes them much healthier, so they are not given antibiotics.

If you want more information about pasture fed eggs as well as what some of the other types of eggs mean, watch this great 6 minute “story of an egg” video, it’s really well done.
