I’m not sure exactly how it happened, but my kids are performers!

My 13 year old son, Kobi, sings with the Boston Children’s Chorus this week he’s in a big Martin Luther King Concert. This picture is when they opened for the Boston Red Sox!

My 10 year daughter,, Ruby is a dancer with the Cambridge Youth Dance Company and has a fierce determination not to miss any of her 7 hours of dance class every week.

But last week I heard it…the sniffle.

You know that sniffle, that sniffle that could easily turn into the sneezles and the cough which could easily drop into the chest and turn into a respiratory illness or maybe even the flu.

I heard that sniffle, and terror struck. I went into full swing with all my remedies, to keep my kids healthy.

So here’s what I did:

I ramped up the veggies

  • We ate veggie soup almost every night this week.
  • I juiced carrots and apples and ginger.

I nixed the sugar:

  • We actually don’t use sugar in our house, I bake with natural sweeteners. But I was clear with the kids this week, that if they were interested in staying healthy for all their rehearsals and shows, they needed to forego any sugary foods that may be offered to them at school. Nothing weakens the immune system quite as fast as sugar.

I pushed the Vitamin C:

  • My favorite brand of Vitamin C is a powder that’s easy to mix into water from The Synergy Company.

I added a liquid Vitamin D, suspended in olive oil and a liquid B12:

  •  Vitamin D boosts the immune system, and B vitamins help our bodies cope with stress. I don’t currently have a favorite brand  of these supplements but I order many of my supplements through Vitacost.

I enforced bed time:

  • Sleep is the ultimate immune booster, and healer.

I encouraged long soaks in a bath with epsom salts and eucalyptus essential oil:

  • Relaxation boosts our ability to fight infection.
  • The smell of Eucalyptus essential oil makes for easier breathing (think vics vapor rub)
  • Epsom Salts reduce any aches in the body.

So far so good. Everyone is well. Kobi’s throat was clear for his amazing concert.

And, as I sit and write this, Ruby is dancing happily around the house.

But sometimes, even with our greatest intentions of keeping our kids healthy we still get hit by a cold or flu.

If that happens here are my favorite remedies

I’d love to hear about the remedies you use in your house!
