MY MARRIAGE…TO MY BODY

“Most of us are going to have 2 or 3 marriages or committed relationships in our life,

And some of us are going to do it with the same person.” Esther Perel

I’d say my husband and I are in our 3rd marriage to each other.

We’ve been married for 21 years.

I’d say my body and I are in our 8th marriage to each other.

We’ve been married for 54 years.

When I ask my clients

How many different relationships have you had with your body?

How many times has your body changed?

They say…

MANY

The numbers range from five to fifteen

The relationships range from ease to war

This long term committed relationship with my body has changed so many times

That moment I felt a sexual tingle in my cells our relationship changed

That moment my boundaries were crossed and my body felt invaded, our relationship changed

That moment I started to grow a baby my body-marriage shifted again

That moment I gave birth, I nursed, I stayed up every night, my relationship with my body transformed again

The health crisis, the surgeries, the weight changes, the aging, the injuries, each and every body change put me in a new phase and new relationship with my body

And each

Each and every change deserves to be marked

Noticed, honored

Each and every change is normal

We don’t have one marriage

We don’t have one body

We have an ever changing body

With an ever present relationship to her

You may not feel very committed some times

You may want a divorce

You may have in fact divorced yourself already

But she remains

This is the longest-term relationship that you have in your life

So a few questions…

How many marriages have you had?

Do you talk about them?

Are you still striving for a “perfect” relationship with your body?
What’s your current relationship?

Are you talking to each other?

My invitation…talk to each other

It’s a relationship worth working on
