September brings two wonderful uncommon and pop-able fruits. Ground Cherries and Kiwi Berries. I love them both! They both have that sweet but tangy thing going on. The only problem I have with them is their tendency to disappear. Really! I just don’t know how that happens. 😉
Ground Cherries come wrapped in a beautiful fibrous package. They look like tiny little lanterns. Inside is the sweet & tangy fruit.
I pop them out of their husk and eat them up. If you have more self-control than I, here is a link to some lovely looking ground cherry tarts . (I would replace the sugar in this recipe for a natural sweetener like honey or date sugar).
The only time and place I have consistently found ground cherries is in late summer/fall at farmer’s markets.
The other fruit that doesn’t last a minute in our house is kiwi berries.
They are like mini kiwis that have no fuzz. You eat the whole thing. They should be a bit soft for maximum sweetness. These ones were grown in Pennsylvania.
Mmmm.

ground cherries are the best. i want to grow them next summer. i discovered them on a CSA farm outside of montreal……yum! you’re right, they don’t last long.
i’ll look out for kiwi berries next year.
Thanks Nina for the info on persimmons.
I’m 78 years old and was always reticent to try this fruit.
