photoToday, I took my son to overnight camp and on the way, we stopped at a service area to get gas and pee. As we were walking through the shop, I said to my son:

“Here’s a challenge, do you think we could find anything healthy here to eat?”

He laughed a knowing laugh, because we were surrounded by shelves and shelves of highly processed, bright colored, highly salted, and highly sugared food-products.

I say “food-products” and not food because there was no real food. At least at first glance, actually at second and third glance,  it seemed like there was not one healthy thing to eat, but we kept searching…until we found some organic dried fruit (no sugar added)…there were two packages – you can see my son pointing to them (the orange and blue packages), next to some nuts (also no sugar added, but too salty).

In a sea of junk food and junk drinks, there WAS something that would actually fuel your body in a way that didn’t add more additives, colors, toxins, and stress to your system.

My point here is that we had to keep looking – we had to really look at everything that was available to us to make a healthy choice – and not just choose what was convenient, or closest to the cash register.

There was something real to eat, we just had to make a bit more of an effort to find it. Honestly, if I can find a relatively healthy snack at a gas station, it’s truly possible to eat healthy in this world of ours. I certainly don’t recommend grocery shopping at gas stations, but it illustrated the point that you can make healthy choices anywhere!

Being healthy means taking that extra moment to make a conscious choice.

Our world is packed with junk food EVERYWHERE, if we want to make a healthy change, we need to look and see what’s available beyond the “food-products.” We need to really read the labels, and we need to create new food patterns. Instead of reaching for what’s familiar, do what my son and I did…search through the shelves and find what’s real.

And, if you don’t want to do all that searching and figuring out alone, step into a learning situation that will open the door to new foods and meal ideas. Step into healthy habits that will have you craving and seeking out the healthiest choices, instead of reaching for the fast and familiar.
