Fruit compote is a natural remedy for constipation, but it’s also a really tasty treat. It’s sweet and syrupy. It’s a comfort food.
My mom always had a bowl of it sitting in the fridge. It may have been there to make sure our digestion was easy, but I always thought of it as a delicious sweet treat.
Whenever I hear of someone heading to the hospital for surgery or coming home from the hospital (hospital stays are notorious for slowing down the digestive tract), I suggest making compote. It’s a gentle way to get the digestion system functioning well.
There are many ways to enjoy compote:
- by itself
- on top of cereal or oatmeal
- on top of toast – like a spread
- with plain yogurt and nuts on top
- with thick coconut milk and nuts on top
Fruit Compote:
- 1/2 cup prunes
- 1/2 cup dried apricots
- 1/4 cup dried cherries or raisins or pieces of dried mango
- 1/2 cup dried apples or pears or peaches
- 1/2 lemon sliced with peels on (for flavor – don’t eat the peels)
- 1/2 orange sliced with peels on (for flavor – don’t eat the peels)
- 1 cinnamon stick (remove after cooking)
- Enough water to cover all the fruit – plus another inch of water.
