Yay! Getting into Oprah is kind of like shouting from the rooftop!

“Have you ever lost weight, only to find the pounds creeping back on just a few months later? Or vowed to eat a healthier diet but found it too hard to decipher food labels or set aside time to cook? If you’re having trouble meeting a health goal, or if you’ve tried in the past and failed, you might benefit from an increasingly popular new resource – a health coach.”

M.D. L. Oprah Magazine

I love that the benefit of working with a Health Coach is being recognized in such a big way!

In the Oprah Magazine article (March 2011 issue) Dr. Lawson, Director of the Health Coaching Track at The University of Minnesota states that:

“A Health Coach is trained to help you break your goal into manageable steps, track your progress, and identify and overcome personal roadblocks.”

That’s totally true, although dryly said. I would give it this spin…

A health coach champions your very best self. She helps you put your health goals into action, so that  you feel fabulous, love your body, your food and your whole life!

Dr. Lawson also brings up an important issue pertaining to the expanding Health Coaching field. She says that you need to choose your Health Coach carefully.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s vital to find a health coach that gets you. If you are a busy mom looking to take care of yourself and your family better, you don’t want to be working with a health coach that focuses on athletes in their twenties. You want someone who gets where you are, has experience with your issues, and can help you get to where you want to go.

Her criteria are:

  • What’s her training? – go for at least 80 hours of training.
  • What additional related training does she have?
  • How many clients has she seen? – go for at least 30

I would add that you want to ensure that your Health Coach is someone…

  • you can be fully yourself with – having a good connection with your health coach is the foundation for getting the support you need and want to reach your personal goals.
  • who walks their talk, practices what they preach.
  • who doesn’t have a one size fits all method…you want to work with a coach who can build a custom program that works for you and your lifestyle.

Now that you know how to choose a health coach, please allow me to toot my own horn. 🙂

I must (not so humbly) admit, I felt pretty good reading that article because I fit the description of a qualified Health Coach and then some.

Regarding training.

  • I have over 180 hours of training with The Institute for Integrative Nutrition and now mentor, health coaches in training.  I’m considered one of the Institutes top health coaches.
  • I’m a certified Psychology of Eating Coach and Teacher and have studied with the Institute for the Psychology of Eating.
  • I trained for 3 years for my Masters in Counseling Psychology. (This really equips me to help my clients move through the obstacles that keep them from taking the best care of themselves.)
  • I’ve studied various bodywork modalities and been a bodyworker for the last 20 years. I developed a body-centered therapy called Awareness Bodywork. It’s a technique I also use with my phone coaching clients to support them in learning Attuned Eating.
  • I studied, lived and worked for 5 years at the Kriplau Center for Yoga and Health – I liken this time of my life to getting a Masters in Holistic Health.
  • I’ve been working in the Health & Wellness field for over 25 years and am continually learning more and incorporating cutting edge information and techniques with my clients.

Regarding Clients:

  • I’ve worked with hundreds of women, helping them reclaim their health and feel good in their body!

And…

I walk the talk. My life is all about making healthy choices that help me feel the most vibrant, so that I can fully enjoy my family and friends, and do the work I was meant to do – help others have their most vibrant life.

Each client I work with is unique, and so is the program that I develop for them.

I tend to work with busy women, lots of moms, who are really great at nurturing everyone else, but need support to take what they know they need to do for themselves and put it into their everyday life.

If you want to see if we’re a good fit, and if I’m someone with whom you can be fully yourself: contact me, I offer a free trial session so you can see what it’s like to work together.

If I’m not for you, I’ll introduce you to another wonderful health coach, who might be a better fit.
