Here is what I made my kids when they came in from sledding today!
This Hot Chocolate is dairy-free and refined-sugar free.
Blend together (in Vitamix or blender)
- 3 tablespoons almonds (2015 update: I made it with hazelnuts instead of almonds and it was delicious!!!)
- 1. 5 cups of water
- (You can also replace the almonds and water with almond milk or hemp seed milk)
- 1 Tablespoon unsweetened cocoa or raw cacao (more if you like a deeper chocolate flavor)
- 1 tablespoon raw coconut nectar or maple syrup or dates (sweeten to taste with your favorite natural sweetener)
- 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
- a generous shake of cinnamon or cardamom (for a special zing)
- for extra richness add a dollop of thick coconut milk from a can or 2 tablespoons of coconut flakes
Blend throughly until fully blended and then heat gently in a saucepan
My kids loved it and I hope you do too.

Thanks for posting this! Was looking for something to get me thru the first few days of being off sugar (again.) – and this really did the trick…yummy and satisfying (on a -22C day here in Canada)!
Hi Michelle,
I’m so glad it hit the spot! Ooooh, I remember those days. I grew up in Montreal and Toronto. Good for you for being off sugar. If your looking for more sweet treats that are not sweetened with refined sugar, search “healthy candy” in my blog. You’ll find Raw Almond Citrus Candy, Banana Candy and a Raw Chocolate Fudge that’s just too tasty!
