Last week, I talked to you about healing, because my mom and kids were in a serious car accident. This week, I’m really happy to report that my mom is now home from the hospital after 2 weeks there. Now some deep healing can happen with the support of sleep, real food, and lots of support. And, my kids are getting better day by day. We’re hoping to be crutch-free and knee-brace-free within 4 weeks!

Healing is so on my mind – so today I want to share with you the most amazing short poem about healing – it’s called Life in 5 Chapters.

It’s about how often we keep falling into the same traps (with food, relationships, habits – really anything) – and that it’s a process to shift into different ways.

Life in Five Short Chapters

CHAPTER 1

I walk down the street.

There’s a deep hole in the sidewalk.

And I fall in.

I am lost. I am helpless. It isn’t my fault.

It takes forever to find a way out.

CHAPTER 2

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again.

I can’t believe I am in the same place.

But it isn’t my fault.

It takes a long time to get out.

CHAPTER 3

I walk down the same street and there is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I see it there, and still I fall in.

It’s a habit.

But my eyes are open and I know where I am.

It is my fault and I get out immediately.

CHAPTER 4

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I walk around it.

CHAPTER 5

I walk down a different street.

By Portia Nelson

This poem is so simple and yet powerful. When I read it for the first time, about 25 years ago, I was firmly in Chapter 2 – walking down the street, and falling into the hole – my painful habits around food and hating my body were plaguing me…it was so frustrating! Now, thankfully I walk down a different street.

I want to help you walk down a different street!
